Creating Community in a Changing Neighborhood
Marcia served as a dedicated advocate for Mill City Commons for five years as chair of the organization’s board of directors but, most important, as a cheerleader, a catalyst and a creative and professional leader. When she stepped off the board in 2014, she was commended for her success in accomplishing a most difficult challenge: creating a strong and vital community in a changing and non-traditional neighborhood which has significant natural barriers. Residents are divided physically by the Mississippi River. And they live,
by and large, in buildings that tend to separate rather than connect people with the broader community outside their individual
buildings or townhouse developments. Nonetheless a strong and vital community -- Mill City Commons -- has emerged as members realize the significant benefits to living in “a village within the city”.
Noting that her role as founder of Mill City Commons “gave me a sense of purpose” amid her move to a new geographic home, she
also acknowledged that it was “sobering to learn how difficult it would be” to build a sustainable organization from the ground up. Her satisfaction in a job well done comes from her pride in Mill City Commons as a catalyst for change in embracing new options for the
aging journey and in its continued commitment to changing the aging experience in wonderful ways. She’s left a significant legacy contributing to the ability of residents to live in community and, even more important, to thrive there!
