About this event
Long before the more widely known protests of the American Revolution, a group of determined women in Edenton, North Carolina made history. In 1774, 51 women organized what is considered the first recorded political action by women in America, boldly boycotting British tea and goods in defiance of unjust taxation.
Join us as MCC member and history enthusiast Catharine Kristian explores the fascinating story of the Edenton Tea Party, placing it within the broader context of colonial resistance and the growing tensions with Great Britain. We’ll look at the events that led up to this moment, the courage and conviction of these women, and the ripple effects their actions had across the colonies.
We’ll also consider how their protest was received, both at home and abroad, and what it reveals about women’s roles in early American political life. Join us for a rich and engaging look at a lesser-known but powerful chapter in Revolutionary history.
