About this event
Americans are living healthier, longer lives, even as long-standing rules, roles, and expectations about retirement and later adulthood are being upended. These shifts bring uncertainty, ambiguity, and risk—yet also open the door to new possibilities for individuals and couples to shape the second half of life on their own terms. Aging is not only about decline; it is also a time for growth. Phyllis Moen explores strategies and protective factors that support these “design-it-yourself” pathways in your encore years.
Phyllis Moen is Professor Emeritus at the University of Minnesota and at Cornell University, is a McKnight Endowed Presidential Chair and was Professor of Sociology at the University of Minnesota. Moen studies the human meanings of social change in the form of innovations in paid work transforming (gendered) career and life course pathways. This includes the effects of both organizational and technological shifts and macro-level historical forces, such as the aging of the workforce and COVID-19.
