About this event
Half of all the students in Minnesota cannot read proficiently. That has been true for so long that now half of Minnesota adults can’t either. Ninety percent (yes, 90%!) of people who are in our jails and prisons cannot read.
Over the last decade some states have finally taken dramatic action to change these outcomes. Mississippi lagged virtually every state 13 years ago. Now its kids read better than kids in Minnesota.
In this session Peter Hutchinson, former Superintendent of the Minneapolis Public Schools, will discuss how we got here and what it is going to take to reverse these trends; Roberta Walburn of the Ciresi-Walburn Foundation will discuss the foundation’s provocative advocacy for change, and TK from Reading Partners will show us how they are changing reading outcomes for kids and how we can join as volunteers in making that happen.
Denying our kids the gift of reading hurts all of us. Please join us.
