About this event
Europe is frightened, and frightening for the first time really since the 1980s, when nuclear sabers were rattling as the Soviet Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) both deployed contending intermediate range missiles along the dividing line of the military alliances. With Russia’s continued barbarity in Ukraine there is no escaping that Vladimir Putin intends not to be “European.” Can Europe be made secure without U.S. involvement? Can the U.S. remain secure and prosperous if Europe’s security collapses? How would China's military and economic support for Russia shift the balance of power if the U.S. leaves NATO?
Our speaker for this program is Tom Hanson. Tom is a former U.S. Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State whose diplomatic postings included East Germany, France, Norway, the Soviet Union, Sweden, and the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. Tom currently is Diplomat in Residence at the Alworth Institute for International Affairs at the University of Minnesota – Duluth and has taught diplomacy at Carleton College. As a member of the Great Decisions advisory committee of Global Minnesota, Tom speaks frequently on international issues and contributes to local and international media.
