About this event
Enjoy this month's reading of The Cherry Orchard, by Anton Chekov, translated by Paul Schmidt.
The Cherry Orchard portrays the decline of the Russian aristocracy as Madame Ranevskaya and her brother Gaev face the loss of their beloved cherry orchard and estate due to mounting debts. Despite the pleas of the practical, upwardly-mobile merchant Lopakhin to save the property by developing it for profit, the family's nostalgic and impractical clinging to the past leads to its auction and purchase by Lopakhin himself. The play concludes with the family's departure and the poignant sound of the cherry orchard being cut down, symbolizing a painful but inevitable transition to a new era.
Note: Dramaturg Jo Holcomb will assign parts.
