About this event
This program is part of Mill City Commons’ Native American Program Series.
Join us for an engaging presentation with Cris Stainbrook (Oglala Lakota), who will explore the role of land as both a livelihood and a source of wealth in tribal nations. As white settlers expanded across the United States in the 19th century, Native nations ceded vast territories to the federal government in exchange for promised protection on reservations.
Cris will shed light on the lesser-known issue of land tenure—how federal laws and regulations prevented Native peoples from fully benefiting from their already diminished lands—and the ongoing challenges and opportunities in returning land to Native control.
For 23 years, Cris served as president of the Indian Land Tenure Foundation (ILTF), a nationally respected Twin Cities–based organization dedicated to assisting Native nations and people with land acquisition, management, and stewardship.
Attendees interested in background reading are encouraged to explore the many excellent resources available on the ILTF website: https://www.iltf.org
