About this event
Enjoy this month's reading of "The Messenger," by Jenny Connell Davis.
At the heart of the story is Georgia Gabor, a real-life Hungarian Holocaust survivor, who details the atrocities she experienced and witnessed as a child during World War II. After the war, Georgia emigrated to the United States, settled in California, and from 1969 to 1993, taught math and told her students about her experiences, much to the ire of a handful of parents in the predominantly white, conservative town.
Georgia’s story is interwoven with three other women across time, who are identified only by the year their story takes place — Gracie Winchester is 1969, Angela Gulner is 1993, and Annie Fang is 2020. Writing these three characters as years and having their stories overlap is an ingenious way to show the horrid endurance of hate throughout time.
Note: Dramaturg Jo Holcomb will assign parts.
